Daenerys Targaryen – Game of Thrones
Cons: C2E2 2012, Wizard World Chicago 2012, ACEN 2013
When Game of Thrones came out way back in 2011, the cosplay possibilities seemed endless…and also very complicated. But the obvious choice for me at the time was Daenerys Targaryen. (I have since decided that Cersei is my main go-to GoT cosplay gal, but I still love Dany’s costumes.) I had long, platinum blond hair and have a similar face shape to her. I was going through this thing where I didn’t want to wear a wig for a while, so I was cosplaying all blond ladies.
I chose to put together Dany’s Dothraki traveling clothes, which she wears for much of season 1. And this costume came together with the help of my roommate at the time, Missy!
Top: Missy shaped the twisty bust part of the top and helped me shape it in general on me. (Without a dress form, it’s very helpful to have another person pin junk on you, as I’m sure you fellow cosplayers know.) I braided the halter and attached everything. Then we ripped up the front to give it a nice destroyed look. And the fabric did a lot of that on its own.
Pants: I thrifted some grey leggings.
Waist Cape: (I don’t know how else to describe this..) I bought dark grey suede, fitted it around myself so it attaches in the front with a snap. Then I cut and ripped up the bottom for the destroyed look.
Waist Piece: Just some cream colored cotton that I ripped up and destroyed. It frayed really nicely. It snaps in the back.
Apron: I used the same material and pieced a few squares together to give it the frayed/destroyed look.
Shoes: I bought some slouchy grey boots from DSW. The Chicago weather gave them a destroyed look just fine.
Hair: I used my hair the first few times I wore this. But the constant dyeing was really destroying my ends. Soooo, I abandoned my Targaryen allegiance and switched to Lannister for a more golden blonde. I ended up getting a lacefront wig from Arda Wigs in silver. I chose silver instead of blonde since that’s how her hair is described in the book.
On top of the costume, my crafty friend Josh made me a Drogon to go with my costume.
